Facebook Archive - August 2024

August 13 - I noticed last night that the contact photo in my phone for Ian was at least four years old and looked like some little kid versus the dude who is in this house now. So I snapped a few pics of him at dinner to update it. Three guesses which one he wanted as his profile pic.

He is 14 years old, 6’3” and strong!

August 15 - For anyone who sat with Rich in the last nine months of his life, Ian has discovered “Always Sunny in Philadelphia” and is watching the entire series non-stop. After seven and a half years, I can appreciate it again and the theme music no longer triggers me. And hearing Ian cackle with laughter is a delight.

Facebook Archive - December 2023

Dec 12 - Sometimes parenting a teenager is difficult. And sometimes you both sing “Feliz Navidad” and Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” in the car on the way to hockey practice. My part is to sing the “And Iiiiiiiiii” while he sings the “don’t care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.”

Dec 15 - Wandering in Target, I bumped into an employee and distractedly said, “Sorry, I’ve lost my child.”
“Oh, no!”
“Oh, no, he’s 6’1”. Soon I’ll be able to see him over the aisles.”

Dec 20 - This morning on the way to school, Ian asked if he could play music from his phone. He plugged up his phone and the speakers start blasting "Last Christmas" by Wham!
Me: "Dude! What if I were playing Whamageddon?"
Ian: "What's Whamageddon?"
Me: "Obviously, not something the kids are into these days. It's a game where you try to go from December 1 to the end of December 24 without hearing Wham's classic 'Last Christmas.' You should look up the details, cause I don't actually play it."
Ian: "This says that you can trick other participants in the game into hearing the song, but it's more of a survival game versus a battle royale."
Me: "That sounds accurate."
Ian: "Wouldn't it have been a suicide bombing then for me to play it in the car with you?"
Me: "Yes, that is disturbingly accurate."

Dec 27 - We’re playing “Ransom Notes” and sorting through magnetic words. Ian was all excited that he had the word “dood” in his pile.
